Are you like me and itching for sunny skies and warmer weather, now that the holidays have passed? One way I satisfy that urge is to bring my Spring and Summer florals out of storage and start creating. Spring is the perfect time to add flowers and greenery to your home decor…but I don’t want to wait! In this post, I will show you how to make an artificial flower arrangement for Spring that is perfect for brightening up any room in your home.
Supplies Needed
- Floral Container: Use your imagination! Don’t overlook nontraditional containers. Coffee cups, hat boxes, bowls all can be used. Also consider where you intend to use the design and size accordingly.
- Floral Foam
- Spanish Moss
- Focal Flowers: Make sure your flowers and container are on scale with each other
- Fillers Flowers: If needed, use a color wheel to decide which colors coordinate best. I like to stay with monochromatic, analogous or complementary colors. Filler flowers should be smaller than your focal flowers.
- Greenery: I like to use at least 2, preferably 3, types/shapes of greenery. Again consider the scale of your greens. I also like to add at least 1 silk/premium greenery. If you use too much plastic greenery, it will cheapen the look of your design. If you are uncomfortable choosing the right combination, look for mixed greenery bushes.
Step By Step Instructions
- Gather Your Supplies
- Prepare your container Fill with floral foam and cover it sparingly with Spanish moss. If needed, you can secure it in place by inserting pins into the sides of it so that it does not move around when adding additional elements to the design. If you are unsure how to prepare the container, watch this YouTube video where I show you step by step.
- Prep Your Flowers and Greenery. Cut each stem at an angle using wire cutters so that they are easy to insert into the floral foam.
- Start designing! It doesn’t usually matter which you do next…you can green the container or add focal flowers to establish your line. Your “line” is an imaginary outline to guide the size and shape of your design. All the remaining elements should stay within or near to the established line. When you begin arranging your flowers, place the largest ones first. Your goal is to create layers of different sizes and textures so that it looks full and lush when finished.
- Fill In Gaps & Fluff Out Flowers. Once all of your focal flowers are arranged in place, go back through the arrangement with small filler pieces like baby’s breath or greenery leaves to fill any gaps between larger blooms. Then fluff out any petals that have gotten crushed during arranging. Finish by placing more foliage in between blooms for added texture and dimension.
- Add Accessories (Optional). If desired, add accessories like ribbons or bows around your container for added interest. I like to do this to “jazz up” a plain container and make it unique.
- Enjoy! Now sit back and admire your beautiful creation! Whether displayed on a coffee table or given as a gift, this handmade faux flower arrangement is sure to liven up any room in no time at all!
