Have you ever wanted to make your own homemade potpourri for Christmas? The good news is that it’s not as hard as you might think! With just a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can make an aromatic DIY Christmas potpourri that will fill your home with holiday cheer. Here’s how…

Gather Your Ingredients

The most important thing when making Christmas potpourri is don’t stress about it! You’ll need some herbs and spices. I like to use cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, rosemary sprigs, orange slices, and fresh cranberries. Sometimes I substitute apple juice for water. I also think star anise is pretty and looks festive, so sometimes I add it. However, I don’t really care for the licorice aroma. The point is, I really don’t worry if I’m out of an ingredient… I make it my own. It still puts me in the holiday spirit!

Ingredients for DIY Christmas Potpourri

  • 3-5 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 1 tsp. Whole Cloves
  • 1-2 Rosemary Sprigs
  • 1 Large Orange, Sliced
  • 1 c. Fresh Cranberries
  • 3-5 Star Anise (optional)

Once you have all the ingredients gathered together, add all to your slow cooker with 5 cups water (or juice). I am impatient, so I simmer on high for about 30 minutes to get the delicious aroma going. Then I turn to low and leave it there for a few hours. And that’s about it! The scent will be more intense if you leave the lid off, but you will also need to replace the liquid more frequently. I usually reuse the mixture for 2-3 days, adding more water as needed.

DIY Christmas Potpourri for Gift Giving

Christmas potpourri is also a great idea for gift giving. It is quick and easy to put together. My grandchildren had a blast making it to take home to their parents! I add the dry ingredients to a pretty snack bag and tie it with a Christmas ribbon. I like to print out instructions for use and attach them with the ribbon.

Making your own homemade Christmas potpourri is easy, fun and a great way to bring some extra holiday cheer into your home! The best part about this project is that there are no rules. Feel free to experiment with different herbs and spices until you find a combination that works for you. So why not try making your very own DIY Christmas potpourri this holiday season? I know you will love it!
