Easy Tip for Using Artificial Flowers

Sharing is caring!

Creating a stunning artificial flower arrangement can transform any room, but the key to a truly eye-catching display is ensuring your flowers stay where you want them. In this post, I’ll walk you through the simple yet effective technique of using floral wire to give your faux florals that perfect, posture. Plus, keep reading for my accompanying video tutorial for a hands-on demonstration!

Understanding the Basics

Before diving into the process, it’s important to know why artificial flowers sometimes struggle to maintain their poise. Like their natural counterparts, artificial flowers can have stems that are too flexible to support the weight of the blooms, leading them to droop or tilt. This is where floral wire comes in handy.

Materials Needed

  • Artificial flowers, fruits, or greenery of your choice
  • Floral wire (gauge can vary based on the weight of the flower)
  • Wire cutters
  • Floral tape (optional for a cleaner look)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Select the Right Wire Gauge: Begin by choosing a floral wire that is sturdy enough to support your flower but flexible enough to be easily manipulated. You will need to use a thicker wire for heavier blooms. Remember, the higher the number of gauge, the weaker the wire. For example, a 19G wire is stronger than a 22G wire.
  2. Cut the Floral Wire: Using your wire cutters cut a piece of floral wire long enough to extend from the base of the bloom to about an inch or two below the stem’s end. This extra length is crucial for anchoring the flower in your arrangement.
  3. Attach the Wire to the Stem: Carefully insert one end of the wire into the base of the flower, running parallel to the stem. If your flower stem is solid and the wire cannot be inserted, you can instead wrap the wire tightly around the stem.
  4. Secure the Wire: If you’ve inserted the wire, ensure it’s snug and won’t slide out. For stems where the wire is wrapped around, use floral tape to secure the wire in place, wrapping it neatly from the top of the stem to the bottom.
  5. Bend and Shape: With the wire in place, gently bend your flower stem to the desired angle. The floral wire inside or alongside the stem provides the necessary support to keep it upright.
  6. Arrange Your Flowers: Now that your flowers have the backbone to stand tall, arrange them in your vase. If needed, adjust the wire further to perfect their positions.

Video Tutorial

NOTE: In this video, I use a fake strawberry stem, however, the technique is the same for faux flower stems or greenery as well.

Final Touches

With your flowers standing tall and proud, step back and admire your work. This simple trick with floral wire can elevate your artificial arrangements, making them look more lifelike and vibrant. Whether you’re decorating for a special event or adding a touch of beauty to your home, well-supported artificial flowers are key to a stunning display.

Remember, the beauty of working with artificial floral supplies is their versatility and durability. Feel free to experiment with different arrangements and techniques, knowing you can always adjust and perfect your designs anytime.
