Supplies Needed
- Hanging Basket
- Floral Foam
- Spanish Moss
- Artificial Flowers
- Artificial Greenery
- Matte Spray Sealant (Optional)
Instructions
- Choosing the Right Basket: The first step in making a hanging basket for your porch is choosing the right basket. You can use any type of basket that you like, as long as it has a hook or handle for hanging. Choose a basket that is proportional to the size of your porch or balcony. If you have a larger space, you can opt for a bigger basket. You can find baskets in different sizes and shapes at your local craft store, garden center or online.
- Choosing the Artificial Flowers and Greenery: When choosing artificial flowers and greenery for your hanging basket, you want to create a natural and realistic look. You can mix and match different colors and textures to add depth and interest to your hanging basket. Consider the lighting in the area the basket will hang. I choose vibrant colors for the basket I made in the video below because I needed them to be visible on our shaded back porch. Choose flowers and plants that are appropriate for the season and the climate in your area. If you need inspiration, you can browse online or visit your local craft store, garden center or florist for ideas.
- Preparing the Basket: Once you have chosen your basket, it’s time to prepare it for the artificial flowers and greenery. You want to make sure that the basket is lined with floral foam keep the artificial flowers and greenery in place. I secured mine to the moss basket liner with floral pins because I was afraid glue might seep through the moss liner.
- Arranging the Artificial Flowers and Greenery: Now it’s time to arrange the artificial flowers and greenery in the basket. Start by placing a layer of greenery. Don’t forget the center! Then place the focal flowers placing the tallest flowers or plants at the center of the basket and work your way out. Next add filler flowers. You want to create a full and lush look, so don’t be afraid to add more flowers and foliage as needed. It seems this always requires more supplies than you think at the start. You can use wire cutters to trim the stems of the artificial flowers and greenery to the appropriate length. However, sometimes, you can add the entire bush and fluff to separate into a more natural look. Don’t forget to let some of the greenery and flowers to drape over the edge, just like in nature.
- Hanging Your Beautiful Basket: Once your hanging basket is complete, it’s time to hang it up on your porch or balcony. You can use a hook or bracket to secure the basket in place. Make sure that the basket is hanging at the right height and adjust it as needed. Try not to hang too high. Step back and view it from a distance. You can also add a decorative bow or ribbon to the handle or hook to add some extra charm and style. If it will be exposed to the elements. you can spray with a matte sealant to prolong the life of the design.
